In July, President Bush signed secret orders authorizing US military action in the “lawless tribal regions” of Pakistan. This action, while having the very beneficial and desired effect of killing jihadis, has raised the hairs of more than a few Pakis, and a few Americans:
Pakistan’s army chief General Ashfaq Kayani Wednesday criticized a recent series of suspected U.S. raids in Pakistan, vowing to defend the country’s sovereignty “at all costs.” Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday said the army chief’s statement reflects government views. Link
Hah! That’s a laugh. You are going to defend the sovereignty of territory your own government claims not to be able to administer? If you have no control over the territory, it is not sovereign unto you. Unless of course you would like to assume full responsibility for attacks being planned and launched from this territory you claim to have no control over.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, said Wednesday the U.S. and its allies cannot, in his words, “kill our way to victory” in Afghanistan. Link
That’s true. Their unconditional surrender should be a key component of any US strategy. Unless you are one of those that believe you can negotiate your way to improved treatment as an infidel under sharia law. How would that conversation go?

Western Diplomat: What if we give you half of Israel, and let you decapitate every Jew in sight? Will you put away the nail bomb then?

Western Diplomat: What if we promise to buy your oil instead of producing our own? Will you stop calling us the big satan then?
Muhammud: No. You are dirty Jew and must accept allah as your only god before I cut your head off anyway.
Western Diplomat: What if we hand over Iraq to your proxies? Then will you stop spreading Jihad all over the world, with a vision of destroying the US?
Muhammud: Jihad!!!
Western Diplomat (to his/her aide): send out the press release….”Americans hold peace talks with Jihadis!!!”
