Josh Mandel Has A Jewish Name
October 27, 2008 | 2 Comments
Recently I received an anonymous tip about a story in Ohio. It’s a local story, but it’s one of those that piqued my interest when I heard the details.
Josh Mandel is a Republican Ohio State Representative, but he is no ordinary public servant. He is also a United States Marine who served in Iraq, and shortly after he was elected to office, the Marine Corps came calling again.
From what I understand, the Marines needed people with Josh’s specialized skill set in battlefield intelligence. Josh could have said, “No Thanks. I have a day job.” But that is not Josh Mandel.
Shortly after being elected, Josh Mandel volunteered to go back to Iraq and serve another tour. As he puts it, “I didn’t join the Marine Corps to say no when my country called.”
Many, including Josh’s co-workers in the State House, regard Josh as a hero. Josh’s opponent vying for the 17th district seat, progressive Democrat Bob Belovich, sees things a bit differently. He thinks that serving in Iraq after being elected is bad for his Ohio district, claiming that Josh went AWOL and abandoned his constituents by going back to Iraq. He has also allegedly been attacking Josh Mandel’s military service, and crediting Mandel’s earlier election success in part due to his “Jewish name.”
That just sounds so Progressive.
I checked into the story, and sure enough, someone was in possession of a recording, allegedly of Josh’s progressive Democrat opponent, Bob Belovich (and his wife), making the comments. I asked for and was given access to the recording and a transcript, on the condition that I would produce a subtitled video of the clip. I agreed.
Below is the recording. I am told that the Belovich’s do not deny making these comments. Classy.
