U.S. Needs A Political Revolution

Friday, August 17, 2001In the midst of the summer congressional recess, Congressman Bernie Sanders asserted today that the United States needs nothing less than a “political revolution” that will revitalize American democracy and move the country toward social justice.
All you have to do to that statement is change “justice” to -ism. And just how do we achieve this social justicism? Why, by redistributing wealth of course!
Americans must – all Americans – enjoy a decent standard of living, rather than having, as at present, the most unfair distribution of wealth and income of any major nation. It is time for political revolution to revitalize American democracy and move the country toward social justice.
Wow. Sounds like Obama’s kind of guy. And what is Bernie Sanders’ prescription for today’s economic crisis? Why surtaxes, and price controls of course! Excerpts from his website:
Specifically, to pay for the bailout, which is estimated to cost up to $1 trillion, the government should:
Impose a five-year, 10 percent surtax on income over $1 million a year for couples and over $500,000 for single taxpayers. That would raise more than $300 billion in revenue;
………
There must be a major economic recovery package which puts Americans to work at decent wages.
……..Legislation must be passed which undoes the damage caused by excessive de-regulation. That means reinstalling the regulatory firewalls that were ripped down in 1999. That means re-regulating the energy markets so that we never again see the rampant speculation in oil that helped drive up prices.
Price controls. Yet nary a word about the corruption at the Socialist boondoggles of HUD, Fannie, or Freddy. No problems there. Nothing to see. Move on.
