One can imagine a world in which newspaper reporters think it’s a serious matter when a Presidential candidate tries to buy an election with illegal and fraudulent contributions.
Why would you slaughter the very cash cow who’s udder you are sucking on? A lot of that no questions asked cash goes into the pockets of the media. Obviously they all subscribe to the don’t ask don’t tell fundraising machine.
