Lifting the Sanctions On Iran Is The Right Thing To Do!

February 14, 2009

The prevailing wisdom spreading across the conservative blogigentsia is that President Barack Obama is revealing his true colors against American interests by dropping sanctions against Iran (and Syria and Cuba).

Atlas Shrugs:

This is frightening. I had heard this was being considered — but I thought it was being circulated to make President Hussein look bad. I was wrong, he is bad. The man has broken  our nation. Who is he working for/with.

Gateway Pundit:

The report would probably seem preposterous if it weren’t for the fact that Team Obama already waived sanctions on Syria and is considering opening travel to Cuba.
It’s like watching Carter on Speed.

Infidel Blogger Alliance:

This man will get us all killed. After he throws Israel under the bus.

All of that might be true, but the bottom line is that it is a good thing that we are dropping the sanctions.

Why? Sanctions are acts of war, but our nation doesn’t treat them that way. We treat sanctions like punishments and that is dangerous.

If an alliance of Islamist nations blockaded America so as to choke off our economy and bring us to our knees, we would consider it an act of war, yet we are arrogant enough to think that we can do just that to other countries without being on a full war footing. We even seem surprised that they would try to destroy us to defeat the sanctions.

Who the hell are we to think that we can “punish” countries or people without enormous blow back. The only way to avoid the blow back is to consider yourself at war with the entity subject to sanction, and fight to win. In which case you don’t need sanctions because they will be moot after your enemy is destroyed.

Let’s stop sanctioning, and either fight the fight or get off the pot. It is too dangerous to sanction countries we are not prepared to defeat at any cost. It only inspires them to defeat us at any cost.

That being said, we should destory the Iranian regime at all costs, with all of the power at our desposal. Faster Please!

What you say only makes sense if we have unlimlted resources for war. Which we don’t. Between troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq and Germany and Korea and so many other places we lack sufficient manpower to fight in Iran as well. In the meantime sanctions can reduce a prospective enemy’s ability to be fully prepared for a future war. I think most Iranian people approve of America. It’s the small ruling class that is the problem. I don’t think there is anything we can do to change them. So we are left with a less than perfect solution to an ugly problem. Sometimes that’s the most you will get.
They’ve seen Obama coming and they will negotiate circles around him. hand him his ass and leave him wondering what happened. They’re going to get Obama before he’s begun to learn his limits and they’ll take him to school. And we’ll be looking fondly back on sanctions.
