Claim: White House Threatens To Have Press Destroy Group Opposing Chrysler Bailout

May 2, 2009

[via Instapundit] If what Tom Lauria says in the clip at this link is true, our government is officially a banana republic.

“One of my clients was directly threatened by the White House….that the full force of the White House press corps would destroy its reputation”

If only the Progressive-Socialist Democrats would be this cruel to our enemies. No, their intimidation is only reserved for American citizens.

The U.S. administration threatening to destroy American citizens because they dare to disagree with the President’s demands? If that isn’t a high crime and misdemeanor, it should be.

And what makes the White House feel so confident that it can get the press to do whatever they…..oh yeah. Never mind.

We eagerly await the rationalizations from the Left as to why this is no big deal.

UPDATE: Powerline agrees.

UPDATE II: Right on cue, here is a liberal blogger that makes the case against the evil capital investors who would dare exercise their rights under contract.

UPDATE III: We are now engaged in some kind of blog conversation with the liberal blog linked to above. Their response to our post is printed below, in which, “pea-brains” refers to us. It’s interesting that our calling them liberal resulted in their name calling. Do they regard the term liberal as a slight?

What the pea-brains aren’t noticing is that there are vast numbers of contracts that are being shredded or amended because of the plight of the automakers. These include contracts with suppliers and, probably, dealers as well as workers. Everybody else is taking a hit. The White House is trying to spread the pain around so that there’s something to salvage and the overall U.S. economy doesn’t take a bigger hit than it’s already taking.

We thought he was trying to spread the wealth around. Your version makes more sense, but NEITHER is the job of the President of the United States of America. Perhaps under a socialist regime things would be different, but under the republic for which we stand, spreading the pain around is not in the job description.

In a perfect world the automakers would be making a profit and the capital investors would be making a nice return on their investment. But when the Titanic is going down it’s not the time to complain that you paid for a cabin with a better view and want a refund.

Contracts are not just for honoring during the good times. In fact, for the most part we wouldn’t need contracts if we were only concerned about the good times. We need them most of all during the difficult times. But now the U.S. government has stepped in and said, “We don’t need no stink’n contracts. All of your contract are belong to us.”

Who in their right mind would want to do business in a post-recovered American economy (assuming we can get there) when you know in the back of your mind that when times are tough, you’re sh!t out of luck because Uncle Sam and the populist mob are going to ruin you if you don’t take the loss they tell you to take. Not even the Chinese are that stupid.

But, as to your premise, our understanding is that the bond holders did offer to take a haircut like everyone else. They just refused to get in the back of the line on payout, because their contract reads otherwise. They also thought they could do better than 30 cents on the dollar, which, in a free world, they have the right to do. It shouldn’t be such a foreign concept that they would attempt to negotiate less of a loss than the people they are negotiating with tell them to take.

It must depend on your perspective. Ours is from a desire for a free-market environment governed by the rule of law, not a command-and-control economy dictated to from the top.

This is so wrong – where is the outrage by the media. If this had been a conservative president he would be impeached.

“We, the Heads of State and Government of OBolivia, Cubama, Dobaminica, Hobanduras, Nicaraguabama and Venezuelobama…

    1. Capitalism is leading humanity and the planet to extinction…

    2. Capitalism has caused the environmental crisis, by submitting the necessary conditions for life in the planet, to the predominance of market and profit…

    3. The global economic crisis, climate change, the food crisis and the energy crisis are the result of the decay of capitalism, which threatens to end life and the planet…”

This cannot stand. The hedge fund that is being told that its contract is worthless should sue the person at the White House who threatened them, then challenge Obama’s authority to preside over the person due to his eligibility. In other words, if Obama was never eligible to appoint the bully, then the bully had no constitutional authority to even be in the White House, let alone threaten private companies, and the truth will come out!!!

    So to paraphrase:

‘Who in their right mind would want to take a job in a post recovered American economy (assuming we can get there) when you know in the back of your mind that when times are tough, your sh!t out of luck because your employer is going to ruin you if you don’t take the loss they tell you to take.’

In fact of course we know that people understand that abnormal times lead to abnormal outcomes. They adjust and bounce back. There’s no need to speculate about scary hypothetical futures, you only need to look at the abundant empirical evidence of the past.

One of the weirdest things about so many anti-Obama voices is their utter lack of faith in the patriotism and common sense of their fellow Americans.

    I don’t think it’s a lack of faith in our fellow Americans…
