Obama Can’t Keep His Tax Promises And Shouldn’t Have To

July 9, 2009

We were somewhat taken aback by this piece from Steven Ohlemacher at the AP considering how many mentions are made of the tax promises that President Obama has already broken. We weren’t quite as surprised to find the tone of the piece not holding President Obama accountable for any of these broken promises. The headline alone says “PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama tax pledge unrealistic” and while this was likely written by an editor and not the author, it is still quite telling.

Obama made a firm tax pledge during the presidential campaign, repeating it numerous times in the weeks and months leading up to Election Day: no tax increases for individuals making less than $200,000 a year or couples making less than $250,000.

“Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes,” Obama told a crowd in Dover, N.H., last year.

But less than a month after taking office, Obama signed an expansion of child health care financed by 62-cent tax increase on each pack of cigarettes.

We presume President Obama could have even added “read my lips” and gotten the exact same level of media enablement. Should we also feel mildly guilty for even asking that President Obama’s promises be kept?

how does he propose paying for the stimulus? national health care?

he will either need to make some rather substantial cuts (hardee har har) or raise taxes.

so you can add this lie to the list right behind “no lobbyists in his white house”, “create or save jobs”, &c., &c., &c.
