PC Schizophrenia In Europe – A Tale Of Two Labels

July 16, 2009

At least one of your Founding Bloggers spent last week in Europe at an undisclosed location, and while there, observed a humorous political correctness schizophrenia embodied in the photos below. Enjoy!

On one hand, the consumer packaging for cigarettes contains the very politically correct warnings of impending doom for evil smokers. We fully expect these labels to begin appearing on US packaging soon.

On the other hand, the completely un-PC candy bar label pictured below also appears on European shelves:

We fully expect these labels to NEVER appear on store shelves in the US.

I see those Yorkie bars in the U.S. all the time…

    Where?

I go to school at Manhattan College. A lot of the Delis in the general vicinity have them. I know for a fact the New Riverdale Deli on 238th Street has them as they’re right next to the register.

I also work in a grocery store in CT and I’m almost positive I’ve seen them there before.

Anyone who can snap a shot of a Yorkie in a US store, please do and send it in. We would love to post it.

This is on the shelves at Wegman’s in Virginia. I told the manager that I was offended by this. According to the manager, he does not care if it is offensive, as his customers vote with their money by buying it. Apparently, he is perfectly willing to offer offensive or discriminatory products if his customers buy it. Therefore, I assume that a candy bar labeled “whites only” or “No Jews allowed” would be acceptable to him as long as enough racists bought it. We thought we’d come a long way, but not far enough.
