The Obama Doctrine: Improving America’s Image Among Our Enemies By Screwing Our Allies

August 28, 2009

America’s betrayal of the South Vietnamese was a national disgrace, a permanent black mark on our honor. Not very good for our image, or our ability to earn and sustain lasting friendships in this world.

If we learn from history, certainly one lesson is that abandoning allies for political expediency is a disaster that can lead to the deaths of millions.

Why then is the Obama administration abandoning today’s American allies?

The United States is poised to dump a critical missile-defense agreement with two of its most dependable NATO allies. The Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza reported yesterday that the Obama administration is going to scrap the “third site” anti-missile system scheduled to be deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic. Missile interceptors in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic were scheduled to be deployed by 2013. Now the plan appears to have been shot down. [MORE]

And the lesson our allies other countries are learning? America is not a dependable long term friend. America is either weak and in decline, and/or the current American government has double crossed everyone and flipped to the other side of the battle of socialism-communism-fascism vs capitalism-democracy-freedom.

What we are all witnessing is The Obama Doctrine: Improve America’s image among our enemies by betraying our allies.

This is their answer to “Why do they hate us?”

They hate us because we arrogantly support people they want to dominate or destroy. Therefore, if we want our enemies to hate us less, all we have to do is stop supporting their enemies, even if they happen to be our allies who’s interests in freedom and democracy coincide with our own.

Under this logic, abandoning Poland makes perfect sense. Thanks to this extraordinary appeasement, Russia will hate us less now. In the old world of Reagan, it was more important to free Poland than please Russia. Today, it is more expedient to screw Poland to make nice with Russia.

The ultra-realist Obama Doctrine. Puke.

Well, if it takes three data points to spot a trend, add throwing Israel under the bus to appease any of a half dozen Islamic countries, and also taking the side of Zaleya in Honduras is certainly gonna please Chavez.

Like you point out, America has a history of stabbing its allies in the back. America does whatever is most convenient for America and that’s it. It’s not just limited to Democrat administrations though – like your example, it was a Republican who pulled us out of Nam, and during the Reagan years we stabbed one our staunchest Cold War allies, South Africa, in the back.

So let’s not break this down along partisan lines by bashing Obama for the Polish missile treaty. Maybe there are good reasons for our going back on it. Maybe it was just a bargaining chip all along. But we’ll never get to any objective analysis of this through the biased perspective of partisan politics.
