Is Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize A Publicity Stunt?
October 12, 2009 | 14 Comments
Upon hearing that President Barack Obama had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, people from all quarters offered their opinions on why the Nobel committee would do something even the President admits he “does not deserve” (White House Communications Chief Anita Dunn :55).
People have suggested that Europeans are trying to influence, or narrow, the President’s choices in Afghanistan.
People have suggested that the committee is comprised of Kool-Aid drinking Obamabots, worshiping His Oneness.
People have suggested that the committee was sticking it to President Bush, and even Reagan.
We have a more cynical take on what they were thinking about when the committee made their choice.
If the Nobel committee had chosen one of the other nominees, like Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition, would anyone still be talking about it? No.
They chose our President for the oldest reason in the book…Publicity. And given that they apparently selected him just shortly after he took office, it might be fair to conclude that they horribly misjudged just how undeserving he would appear by the end of the year (see above).
But, like we said when we heard the news… after Yasser Arafat won the prize, who gives a crap? When the committee lists its previous winners, would you want to share accolades with Yasser Arafat?? Congratulations on that honor Mr. President.

Who gives a crap? Some broad in Kenya gave a crap and tried to pass it off as a crap taken in Hawaii.

While there are some people in its history who have received the Nobel Peace Prize that deserved it a hell-of-a-lot less than Barack Obama (Henry Kissinger and Yassar Arafat come instantly to mind), I don’t think the good folks in Olslo did the president any favors by presenting the Nobel to him so early in his presidency.
Woodrow Wilson received his in 1919 only after his work for the League of Nations (at considerable cost to his own physical health).
Theodore Roosevelt obtained his prize in 1906 after negotiating an end to the war between Japan and Russia.
Jimmy Carter got his (post-presidency)after bringing Egypt and Israel together – no small feat!
All due respect to the president – after all, he never solicited this award and it was as much of a surprise to him as it was to everybody else – but what the hell has HE done for peace lately?
Am I missing something?

Sometimes the award is meant to politically urge peace. It was given to Stalin after WW2 to guilt him into not killing off all the uprising eastern Europeans. It was given to Arafat to guilt him into sending less suicide bombers and to make him pursue peace. Hell even Hitler was nominated although that clearly failed to do what it intended (maybe it did he didn’t invade Norway where the prize is voted on)
What I mean to say is the award seems to be given to him to ensure he KEEPS his promises on pulling out of Iraq and Afgahnistan.
The Nobel Prize Committee has completely stripped the prize of any prestige or value by constantly passing over those who’s achievements actually deserve the award. By giving the award to someone who has good intentions, rather than actions, the prize has no value. Remember, Ronald Reagan actually helped to free millions of people from communism, yet never received the award – http://www.watercoolerweekly.com
It’s really hard to take the award seriously, although the Nobel Committee apparently do. Of course, it was hard to take other awards seriously, like for Arafat, Gore, and Carter.
The seriousness of the award is the fact that some people take the Nobel Prize seriously in spite of the joke it has become.
Seriously!
Publicity stunt or not there is always a humorous side to these things. Here the President’s doppleganger explains the rationale behing the committee’s decision, http://blog.beema.com.
Yasser set the standard. Nuff said.
The Nobel Peace Prize Committee
They gave him the prize Nobel,
Their view of the world to sell,
You’re just one in the world,
Stars & Stripes, keep it furled,
To belong, just do as we tell.
