Here is some other photos from the same scene.
http://deus-ex-machinima.net/dr/Picture%2015.jpg

Some points. Saying "He made a serious error by NOT painting any orange on the smokestack itself." is wrong. 100% wrong. If someone was colorizing that photo, they would make the mistake of painting over the stack. Not the other way around. It's dark and doesn't show color.

Secondly, "Look at the right side of the giant structure, where the sunlight hits. Under normal conditions this highlight would reflect the color coming directly from the sun. But it’s actually the exact same color red as the smoke." That's because the smoke - being white - is reflecting the sun light, thus it is ALSO the same color as the sun.

Seriously, you guys sound like a bunch of scientifically illiterate moon theorists.

You guys went through way too much trouble. It's quite easy to see that the image is colorized.

Look at the right side of the giant structure, where the sunlight hits. Under normal conditions this highlight would reflect the color coming directly from the sun. But it's actually the exact same color red as the smoke.

Unless the sunset was a really harsh red that day, it's quite obviously manipulated. And even then, to say the smoke itself was that color is a lie.

Here's the deal. Just do this if you dare... Look at the temps in the Arctic and Antarctica. You can Google it easily. It's really really cold. Way below zero a lot of the time. Right now the temps are not even that extreme in either place, as it is Spring in Antarctica and Fall in the Arctic. Yikes, what kind of fool would believe all that ice is melting?

Molon, look a tad closer. The area in question is part of the plume roughly the length of the arrowhead just to the right and slightly up. This reveals the underlying grayscale photo that the retoucher didn't apply the orange tinting to. That area is not the background cloud but part of the plume. This is evident when viewing the grayscale version.

Sorta lost me when A1, which purportedly "is mysteriously missing any orange tone" points directly at an area of orange tone.

Mike, you touched on the first thing that flagged this image as being suspect for me - the "doom dinge" that was also added to the presentation of Hurricane Katrina imagery by Al Gore in An Inconvenient Truth. Here's the image I recalled seeing. Note that all satellite images show hurricanes as they actually appear in nature - a pure white color that does not appear threatening, hence the "need" to sex-up the danger impression.

This may be the Jefferson Energy Center with actually has a St. Mary's address or the Lawrence Energy Center, located in Lawrence, KS. I can see the plume from the Lawrence plant from my office building. I can state with complete certainty that this must be a doctored photo. The plumes from either plant are primarily water vapor and are almost always white in color. The Lawrence plant may be one of the dirtiest plants in the country, but this picture is a complete fabrication.
