no, no, no. You said, “Media Matters arrives at this conclusion because Hynes ran unopposed in his district. That means he ran on EVERY line on the ballot.”

New York has full fusion voting. To “get on” a ballot line you have to enough signatures from registrants of each party. The DA got all 4 lines because he a) wanted a landslide victory and b) there were no other viable candidates for the parties to back, and most importantly c) the parties want people to vote on their line because it’s a measure of their power and popularity.

Of course he “actively sought” the WFP’s endoresment, just like he “actively sought” the Conservative party’s endoresement. And of course neither party turned him down…drum roll please…because in fusion voting parties want votes on THEIR line. The WFP and Conservative parties are minor parties, they need every vote they can get to show clout, they aren’t going to not endorse in most races because they need to scrounge for every vote they can get.

If you’re going to conclude that the DA is in the pocket of the WFP then you’re going to have to take a different tact, because according to this logic he’s also in the pocket of the conservatives, dems, and reps.

Since Hynes actively sought the political nod from ACORN/WFP, he had no business conducting an investigation or weighing in on a decision.
The conflict of interest is blatant, but Hynes didn’t have the ethics to recuse himself. Politics as usual.

Correction to above: There are eight states where this would not be a conflict of interest: CT, DE, NY, OR, ID, SC, VT, and MS.

How this is NOT a conflict of interest in New York (but would be in every other state except for Oregon) is because of electoral fusion, where smaller parties such as WFP, Green, and Conservative can endorse a candidate of one of the two major parties (Democrat or Republican), and that person does not have to consent to the endorsement.
