Want a Tummy Tuck? Obama Wants 5%

March 27, 2010

We here at Founding Bloggers have been doing what Congress didn’t – we’ve been reading the new health care bill.  This particular section, not yet widely publicized, ought to be welcome news to anybody looking into hair plugs or botox, e.g., Vice President Biden.

SEC. 9017. EXCISE TAX ON ELECTIVE COSMETIC MEDICAL PROCEDURES.

    (a) In General- Subtitle D of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended by this Act, is amended by adding at the end the following new chapter:

‘CHAPTER 49–ELECTIVE COSMETIC MEDICAL PROCEDURES

‘SEC. 5000B. IMPOSITION OF TAX ON ELECTIVE COSMETIC MEDICAL PROCEDURES.

‘(a) In General- There is hereby imposed on any cosmetic surgery and medical procedure a tax equal to 5 percent of the amount paid for such procedure (determined without regard to this section), whether paid by insurance or otherwise.

‘(b) Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Procedure- For purposes of this section, the term ‘cosmetic surgery and medical procedure’ means any cosmetic surgery (as defined in section 213(d)(9)(B)) or other similar procedure which–

‘(1) is performed by a licensed medical professional, and

‘(2) is not necessary to ameliorate a deformity arising from, or directly related to, a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma, or disfiguring disease.

The good news is that any elective cosmetic medical procedure not performed by a licensed medical professional will not be subject to the new tax.  Sounds like a recipe for back-alley liposuction and acid peels.

Read the whole thing.

Had my plastic surgery just in time. Phew! The bill passed just AFTER I had it done.

I would have had it done in Thailand if it was going to be taxed. No sense in stimulating the economy in the States when the taxes go to support the reparations distribution that the jugearedjackass plans.

However, I thought that the tax was taken out of the bill because the plastic surgeons said they were worried about confidentiality… Guess not. Oh, my. We were lied to? Hard to imagine that!
