BULLSH!T: “Al-Madadi may have said he was going to light his shoes on fire to cover up that he was smoking.”

A man with striking similarities to the profile of a potential terrorist attempted to light something on fire on board an aircraft yesterday.

If officials and alleged news outlets are to be believed, there is probably nothing to see here.

Note how the article below characterizes the behavior of the suspect as a matter of fact. He was trying to sneak a smoke and that’s all there is to it. Just a big misunderstanding (emphases added in bold).

DENVER, CO - A Qatari diplomat trying to sneak a smoke in an airplane bathroom sparked a bomb scare Wednesday night on a flight from Washington to Denver, with fighter jets scrambled and law enforcement put on high alert, law enforcement officials said.

No explosives were found on the man and officials do not believe he was trying to to harm anyone after he was subdued at Denver International Airport Wednesday night, according to a senior law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

…..The suspect was identified as Mohammed al-Madadi, a diplomat in Washington, DC’s Qatar embassy, ABC reported. The network citing FBI sources said the man was a third secretary and vice-consel at the embassy and had full diplomatic immunity.

Two officials told the Associated Press that the man is a Qatari diplomat who had been in the United States for years.

News10 sister station KUSA 9News in Denver reported a passenger had spent a lot of time in the bathroom and when he came out, an air marshal on the plane smelled smoke and asked the person what he had been doing. The person responded that he had been trying to set his shoes on fire.

An official said an air marshal on the flight apparently restrained the man. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.

Investigators believe the man may have tried to smoke inside the bathroom, which is not allowed on any domestic flights.

According to authorities, Al-Madadi may have said he was going to light his shoes on fire to cover up that he was smoking.

You’ll have to forgive us if we call bullsh!t on this one. By way of metaphor, this might not be a duck, but it sure walks like one and appeared to be trying to quack like one. At the very least, there is no way the narrative pushed in the story above can possibly be believed at face value.

If the article is accurate, the suspect has been in this country for years. There can be no doubt then that he should be well-aware of the laws regarding smoking on board an aircraft, let alone the prudence or wisdom of using the bizarre tactic of LIGHTING YOUR SHOES ON FIRE TO COVER UP YOUR CIGARETTE.

Either this is the single most mentally handicapped diplomat serving any nation on earth, or this story is a bull.
