How That War On Guns And Drugs Working Out For You Chicago?

May 30, 2010

Today’s horrifying headline from the front line of the war on drugs:

At least 21 wounded in separate shootings, 1 dead

At a news conference this morning, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said that nearly half of the shootings appear to be gang-related, including the fatal incident. Weis added that at least two of the other victims have refused to cooperate with police, “which makes the job of our detectives … far more difficult.”

End the war on drugs, and the scale/ferociousness of gangs all across our nation will collapse. The life blood of these violent gangs is black market drug profits. The profits are how they afford their guns.  The search for profits is why they expand. The search for profits and expansion of black market territory is why they use their guns.

If these gangs were rich white kids killing each other in upscale neighborhoods, would the government response to our cities being transformed into violent blood baths be any different? If the North Shore of Chicago became a drug-war killing field, would people demand creative policy changes?

Don’t let the hypothetical above throw you off. This is not just about race. A question that should be asked of every American regardless of race, especially preachers and so-called ‘leaders’ in communities across this nation that are suffering like Chicago is: Can you honestly say that you think our communities would be LESS safe without the war on drugs? It is hard to believe that ending the drug war would destroy more lives than the drug war currently does.
